Malaysia

Started the 2025 season in Malaysia, missed the cut at Selangor Masters but won the pro-am with a strong finish.

The 2025 international season kicked off with the Selangor Masters at the Seri Selangor Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This is an event and course I’m familiar with, having played it last year. Seri Selangor reminds me of the course I grew up playing back home in Auckland, The Grange Golf Club. It places a premium on hitting fairways to have the best chance of getting the ball close on its firm, fast greens.

Before the golf began, I had the opportunity to participate in the “Visit Selangor 2025” tourism campaign by filming a video with two other golfers, exploring the highlights of the Seri Selangor area. The journey took us to several local attractions, including Roti Canal Pelangi, Ah Ma House, River View Seafood Restaurant, and finally Bukit Malawati. This experience gave me a unique insight into Malaysian culture and cuisine, while also allowing me to visit some incredible landmarks along the way.

With the sightseeing done, it was time to prepare for the Selangor Masters. I was looking forward to returning to a course I knew and had played well on in the past. Round 1 got off to a solid start, but a few unforced errors meant I spent most of the day scrambling for pars. While I managed to save many pars, the lack of birdie opportunities led to a 1-over-par round of 71.

Day 2 was a similar story—I didn’t give myself enough chances to score, and while I made a few birdies, I couldn’t keep the bogeys off the card. This resulted in a 4-over-par round of 74, leading to a missed cut.

The week wrapped up with a pro-am event alongside the tournament sponsors following the final round. The 4-man scramble format was a fun and relaxed way to close out the week. Our team played exceptionally well, finishing with two eagles and ten birdies for a score of 14-under-par 57, winning the pro-am by a single stroke. It was a fantastic way to end the week before heading home to New Zealand.
